Steroid Name: Oxymetholone – Anadrol
aka: Anadrol 50, A50, A-bombs, Adrol, Anapolon
Forms: Oral (tabs, caps and paper), liquid
Mostly Used For: Kick starting a Bulking Cycle
Oxymetholone is more commonly known as Anadrol – its first trade name following its synthesis in 1960.
Initially, the DHT derived steroid was used to treat anemia and osteoporosis, and other diseases which involve uncontrollable weight loss and muscle loss.
Anadrol – like all steroids – has since been adopted by many members of bodybuilding and athletic communities as a performance enhancing drug.
By increasing Red Blood Cell (RBC) count, appetite, protein synthesis it assists the user in building muscle mass, hence its primary use as a bulking steroid by strength athletes and bodybuilders.
Side effects include suppression of endogenous (natural) testosterone, blood lipid imbalances, headaches and excess water retention.
Oxymetholone is also alkylated, like other oral steroids, so comes with the associated liver toxicity. It is probably not the most hepatotoxic steroid per milligram but it becomes so due to the dosage required (see dosage section) for anabolic response.
Main Benefits to the Bodybuilder / Athlete
Opinions are divided with respect to how Anadrol brings about its effects. Many references will describe it as highly androgenic – presumably meaning the person understands this would mean that Anadrol binds tightly to the Androgen Receptor (AR).
Many others can attest to the fact that it does not bind well to the AR at all. This website’s experienced contributors agree.
This characteristic makes Anadrol a good stacking steroid, as it will not compete with the other compounds for the AR.
The bodybuilding benefits are therefore non-receptor related. They include:
- Increased Red Blood Cell count
- Increased Appetite; leading to…
- Enhanced Muscle Growth
- Increased Mass
Due to these highly anabolic traits (and the side effect of water retention), Anadrol is not a good choice for cutting cycles.
Side Effects of Anadrol
Hepatotoxicity (liver toxicity) is the first and most important concern. This makes Anadrol a short term bulking steroid.
People have been known to push a 150mg dosage for more than 6 weeks, but it’s a rarity. Besides, the other side effects can make it difficult to use past 3 weeks.
Another point to remember is that the steep anabolic curve dramatically tails off after 3 or 4 weeks.
The last thing to say about the liver is this: stacking Anadrol with other oral steroids like Anavar and Dianabol will just increase the side effect. The only way Dianabol and Anadrol can be taken ‘safely’ together is by half-dosing both. There aren’t many benefits to stacking them anyway.
Estrogenic side effects are another problem. Aromatization to estrogen happens despite the fact that oxymetholone does not actually convert via aromatase activity itself. The cause of the conversion is therefore largely unknown.
Nonetheless, gynecomastia (male breasts) and excess water retention can occur. Again, although the conversion to estrogen is apparently not the pathway, an Aromatase Inhibitor like Arimidex (Anastrozole) or Letrozole still reduces these effects.
Suppression of natural testosterone levels is a given with most steroids, and this one is no different. Natural recovery is possible but can take months after only a few weeks of usage.
Most people use injectable steroids alongside to mitigate the hormone suppression in the short term. Nonetheless, a period of PCT will be necessary following the cycle.
Blood lipid profiles can be affected by Anadrol. HDL (‘good cholesterol’) may be lowered while LDL (‘bad cholesterol’) may be increased.
The last major side effect to mention are the headaches which many users have reported experiencing.
Dosage and Usage
Again, different sources report different findings. It is our inclination to follow the scientific study in this regard. Much more empirical evidence is available from users, which is normally the better base of knowledge.
Anadrol is a little different.
While other steroids are dose dependent; where as dosage increases, so do benefits and side effects.
With A-drol 100mg brought obvious increases compared with 50mg per day. However, 150mg produces little increase in benefit compared to 100mg – and the side effects still increase dose dependently.
The lesson here is that guys who boast the use of 300mg per day may experience some increase in anabolic response but a lot more in terms of side effects. That, or they are unusually tolerant to the negative impacts.
Regardless – with Anadrol, more than 100mg per day does not necessarily bring better results.
Availability – Legality – Purchase
We’ve covered the legal point in our methandrostenolone (Dbol) article which you can read at your own leisure. Repeating ourselves on this issue ad nauseam would get annoying for our readers.
To summarize: this site’s information is for educational purposes, to help better inform people about the truths and risks of taking steroids.
Availability of Anadrol in the form of pills, capsules, tablets, liquid and even paper is – dependent on where you live – abundantly available from black market contacts.
Purchasing it from a person or online ‘lab’ comes with the risk of (a) not receiving genuine product, (b) not receiving anything at all, and (c) getting stung by the feds. Proceed at your own risk.
Anadrol is notoriously manufactured in 50mg tablets, although other doses have been made.
